Caliper Anatomy & Measuring Techniques

Outside Jaws

Place the object between the large bottom jaws. Bring the jaws into snug contact with the object surfaces to read thickness or diameter.

Inside Nibs

Insert the upper pointed nibs inside a bore, hole, or pipe opening and slide outward until touching the interior walls.

1:1 Physical Scale

Calibrate your screen with a credit card so the jaws physically open on your display to true millimeter accuracy.

Need a standard linear scale? Use our Online Ruler, test angle geometry with the Online Protractor, or calculate diagonal density with the PPI Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Digital Caliper

Technical details on caliper resolution, inside vs outside measurements, and tare calibration.

What is an online digital caliper?▼

An online digital caliper is a digital replica of an engineering vernier caliper. It features precision outside measuring jaws, inside measuring nibs, a digital LCD readout, and fine thumb adjustment. When your screen is calibrated, the jaws open to exact physical 1:1 scale on your display.

What is the difference between outside and inside jaws?▼

The large lower jaws (external jaws) measure outer dimensions such as object thickness, pipe outer diameter, or screw length. The upper nibs (internal jaws) measure inner dimensions such as hole diameters, slot widths, or interior gaps.

What does the ZERO (Tare) button do?▼

The ZERO button sets the digital readout to 0.00 at the current jaw position. This allows for comparative measurement, tolerance checking, or measuring differences between two parts without mental math.

Can I use arrow keys to adjust the caliper?▼

Yes. Focus the caliper and use the Left and Right Arrow keys for fine 0.1 mm adjustments. Hold Shift with the arrow keys for 1.0 mm adjustments, or use Home/End to snap to 0 or maximum opening.
